Course content
Classes are kept to a maximum of 12 children or teenagers, or up to 14 adults. Sessions are for developing tools needed to perform on the amateur or professional stage, or in film and TV. Side-benefits include an increase in confidence, vocal clarity, and a sense of fun. Classes are good for getting over barriers to expression, or adding freshness to an actor’s work. Learning how to be in the moment, think quickly and work as a team are all part of the toolkit.
Term 1: Acting Up.
Finding our actor’s voice, playing with characters, reading and performing scripts, developing confidence.
Term 2: Devising Theatre.
Creating scenes together, improvising & story-telling, write some scripts for performance.
On the last Monday of terms 1 & 2, the students will put on a small performance for invited family and friends.
Term 3: Putting on a Play.
Create and rehearse an amazing show to go on at the Titirangi Theatre.
In the last week of term 3, the students will put on a show for three nights at the Theatre.

Titirangi Theatre encourages performing arts by producing a fine selection of plays each year, running costume hire, supporting events, and offering acting workshops for children and adults.
The Theatre, newly refurbished as part of the Lopdell Precinct restoration, is a great place to belong. It gives people the opportunity to get involved on or off stage, or as audience members. Participants in acting training get a chance to be part of the theatre, including class trips to plays (when appropriate).
John’s philosophy
“Acting training will challenge you at your own level. Like anything, you get out what you put in.
Of course part of the challenge is to combine fun and focus. Students are expected to turn up on time, learn their lines, respect and encourage others, and work as a team.
Experienced and inexperienced actors have worked successfully together in my classes for the last 20 years.”
“Performing is good for the brain. Think of acting as a mind sport. Athletes are accustomed to preparation and practice, stretching, visualising, trying numerous training methods to keep things interesting. This creates a versatile, strong athlete who can read the game and think on their feet. In a same way an actor’s preparation readies them to play their part in the moment.”
John’s experience
As a tutor since 1995, hundreds of adults and children have been through John Goudge’s fun and effective courses, including at Rimu Glade Studio, his own drama and music studio in Oratia.
He is often invited into schools, theatres and other institutions to run workshops, direct shows or help with production. He has been an actor or director for Titirangi Theatre many times, recently as director for the sell-out season of Fawlty Towers, and the very successful production of Shirley Valentine.
As a working actor, musician, theatre director and events person, John has a well-rounded perspective on performance arts.
Testimonials
I did two years of acting classes with John Goudge, and apart from learning the art of acting, he taught me a lot about back stage and all the effort that goes on behind the scenes to get a show on the boards. Acting classes changed my thinking and my attitudes and expanded my life thinking. I think everyone should do classes like these.
My daughter has been taking classes with John for about two and a half years (she's 15).
During that time, I have really seen her develop, not only in terms of her acting, but in her self-confidence as well. She has said to me that she finds the classes interesting and challenging. I believe that her having the opportunity to meet those challenges has helped her be more outgoing in all areas of her life. In addition, the class has led to her creating new friends. Without hesitation, I would recommend this class to any young person.
